問題文

Dear Hiromi,

How’s everything? Yesterday in class, I heard something interesting from my teacher. She said that in Japan girls give chocolate to boys on St. Valentine’s Day, but that boys don’t have to give anything back. Is it true? I always get in trouble if I forget to send my girlfriend a Valentine card and flowers or candies. Of course, she gives me a present too. Anyway, I was wondering If Valentine’s Day is popular and if everyone in Japan celebrates it. And what do you think about that?
Write when you have some time.

Best wishes,
Peter

自作解答

Dear Peter,
Everything is fine. St. Valentine's Day is very popuar in Japan. But, as your teacher said, we have different custom from your original Valentine's. Basically, we, only girls usually give our boyfriends a chocolate. Sometimes, we present something with the chocolate. As a reply to present by girls, boyfriends given present on Valentine's Day, give some gifts to their girlfriends a month later, that is called "white day". I think it is not bad, mainly because we have grown up with such a custom natural.
I wish I can help you understand ouc custome. Please dond't forget to present something on white day if you are given on Valentine's Day by Japanese girls.

Best wish,

Hiromi

模範解答例

Dear Peter,
Everything is fine. I’ll answer your questions as best I can.
First, it’s true that on Valentine’s Day Japanese girls give mainly chocolate to boys and boys do not give anything to girls. But girls get candies or some gift in return from boys on 14th of March, on what’s called “White Day.” We don’t usually exchange valentine cards. A lot of people these days enjoy Valentine’s Day as it’s fun to give and receive presents but I think it’s more popular among younger people. I don’t think it is a good idea to celebrate something without any knowledge of it. A cultural event should be celebrated by those who know the value of it.
I hope that answers your questions.
Your friend,
Hiromi
