How Compassion and Altruism Create Resilience

Helping others is a life raft
- People who volunteer after a tragedy feel more optimistic and energized, and less anxious, angry, and overwhelmed. (Cristea et al. 2014)
- Survivors of a natural disaster are less likely to develop PTSD if they helped others in the immediate aftermath. (Doran et al. 2014)
- Among people with chronic pain, becoming a peer counselor relieves pain, disability, and depression and increases purpose. (Arnstein et al. 2002)
- After the death of a spouse, taking care of others reduces depression. (Brown et al. 2008)
- Victims of a terrorist attack feel less survivor guilt and more meaning in life when they find a way to help others. (Kleinman 1989)
- After a heart attack, people who volunteer experience more hope, less depression, and a greater sense of purpose. (Sullivan & Sullivan 1997)
