問題文

Dear Kenji

Hi from Sydney! I'm writing a report about Japanese high schools. Can you answer a few questions for me?
First, when does the Japanese school year begin and end? Also, I've heard that many high school students go to a cram school, or "juku", in the evenings. Can you tell me more about that? Do you think cram schools are helpful?

Thanks for your help!

Best wishes,

Diane

Dear Diane

Hi! I'm glad you are interested in my country. I wish my reply help you much. Let me ask your questions now.

First, we start school year in April.

Next, as you said, many of us go to some cram schools. we think we cannot learn enough to pass the entrance exam. Admission policy in Japan highly weigh the score of the examination made by the individual university, which is more difficult than SAT. So we have much uncertainty to study enough to pass. This is why we need additional school.

I'm not sure I can reply as you want.
I'm looking forward to seeing you again!

Best,

Kenji

Hi! I’m glad you are interested in my home country. I would answer your question.

First, our school year starts in April, and ends in March.

Next, many of us go to cram schools, that is, we go to two schools in one day. We think high school doesn’t provide enough to pass the entrance exam. Admission policy of Japanese university usually highly weighs the score of the single exam made by individual departments, which is more difficult than SAT-like test. Additionally we don’t have much chance to transfer. So we think we cannot prepare too much for entering good university only by studying at high school. This is why we need additional schools. Make sense for you? If not, please give me a reply to me. I hope I can help your report very much.

Best wish,

Kenji

Dear Diane,
Thanks for your letter. I'll do my best to answer your questions.
First, the Japanese school year begins in April and ends in March.
Regarding cram schools, many high school students go to these schools after their regular classes on weekdays, and some even go on weekends. Cram schools allow students to focus on their weak areas or subjects. In Japan, most high school students who want to go to university must take entrance exams, so this extra study can help them prepare.
I think cram schools are useful because everyone is there to learn, and the teachers show their students effective test-taking strategies.
Good luck writing your report.
Take care,
Kenji
