Dear mai,

I hope you’re well.

Yesterday, I read a magazine article about retirement in Japan, and I’d like your opinions. The article mentioned that nowadays more people choose to continue working after retirement age. Why do you think this is happening?

The article also said some people move to the countryside to get away from the city when they retire. Do you think this is a good idea?

Where I live, elderly people can ride the bus and enter movie theaters for a cheaper price. In your opinion, are these kinds of discounts necessary?

I look forward to your answers.

Anthony

Dear Anthony
As your magazine says, more people like to work after retirement age in Japan. Elder person is getting healthier than those in the past. They still have enough energy to work every day.

So, I don't think moving to the countryside is good idea. Bigger cities have more chance to work, in general. This is the answer to the second question.

Finally, I think discount is not necessary, but good idea. Without discounts, many theaters are almost empty in the afternoon of weekdays. Discount gives the aged a strong incentive to see the movie in the theater, and makes that industry more profitable.

These are the answers of your questions. I wish I can help you and you get more interested in my country.

Best,

Mai

模範解答例

Dear Anthony,

Thanks for your e-mail.

I think more people are working after retirement age these days because they are healthier and more active than in the past. Many elderly people can still contribute a lot to society.

Many people move to the countryside after retiring, but I don't think this is a good idea. Retired people have lots of free time, and there are more cultural activities such as concerts and museums for them to enjoy in cities.

I believe discounts for senior citizens are necessary. Most senior citizens have little money because their only income is from their old-age pension.
