2009年第3回筆記4

Topic: Do the world’s wilderness areas need to be better protected?
Points: Biodiversity/ Ecotourism/ Rights of indigenous peoples/ Population growth/ Economic development/ International cooperation

解答例
Although many people support blanket protection for the world's wilderness areas, I believe that long-term survival of such regions depends on them being carefully managed and exploited.

Some wilderness areas, such as the Amazon Basin, are under serious threat from logging. However, these areas are also home to many plant species that can provide us with life-saving medicines. These plants can only flourish if the biodiversity of forests is maintained. We cannot expect people to stop logging, but sustainable logging would be a step in the right direction.

Another threat to wilderness area is population growth. In developing countries, people are moving into previously uninhabited areas and threatening animal habitats. This cannot be prevented altogether, but it is important that governments try to limit the impact in these areas by, for example promoting eco-friendly agricultural practices.

Finally, ecotourism can help local economies in need of vital income and protect wilderness areas at the same time. Take the Shiretoko Peninsula World Heritage site. The area's economy, which was previously struggling, is now benefiting from careful use of ecotourism, and in return tourists get to learn about and appreciate nature.

Improving the lives of people should always be a priority, and responsible exploitation of wilderness areas can help do just that.

自答
Generally, we love affuluent nature. We eagerly hope to protect and sustain it. But the solution to the problem concering the protection of wilderness area is not straightforward. In thinking this problem, we need to have broader insights.

First of all, when we think of this problem, we have to respect the indigenous people in wilderness areas. They have the rights for good lives as well as we have, people in economically and scientific-technologically developed regions. We must not just say they should protect and maintain the wilderness because they have the right to use resources in their countries for their economic welfare.

What do we have to do for the protection from the developed regions? International cooperation is indispensable. We can protect wilderness areas far from us by supporting their lives economically. We provide them with the incentive not to exploit natural resources by economic support.

Another possible solution is ecotourism. Of course economic support is necessary, but not sufficient. Success in the long term needs autonomy. In some places in the world, ecotourism is making indigenous peoples economically better with the nature sustainable. The idea of ecotourism need to be prevailing more deeply all over the world.

When we think of the natural environment, we tend to imagine this is not our own problem. But, as stated above, this is also our problem and we have a lot of things to do for protecting the world's wilderness areas.
